Trauma Network

The PICT Team operates as part of the larger Scottish Trauma Network

Prehospital responders to trauma across Scotland are categorised as Red, Yellow or Green responses.

These categories correlate to the clinical interventions they can offer to a patient at the roadside.

Red Resources

Red Resources can offer a broad range of interventions in the pre-hospital setting including emergency anaesthesia and the provision of blood products.

Yellow Resources

Yellow resources (such as PICT) offer a broader range of interventions when compared to a Green Resource, this included enhanced analgesia, a broader range of emergency medications, and some surgical skills.

Green Resources

Green resources offer a comprehensive skillset to manage traumatic injuries and to liaise with Yellow or Red resources to discuss the need for additional input.

Scotland presents a number of geographic challenges when providing prehospital patient care. The next nearest doctor/practitioner enhanced care team is EMRS in Aberdeen (100+ miles by road) who may be able to respond to the highlands by air. Historically the Tayside Trauma Team’s area of operation also met PICT as they were able to travel up the A9 from Dundee for significant events. There is also an EMRS team in Glasgow and MEDIC One in Edinburgh.
