Ultrasound Training

Team members recently attended the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine’s (CoROM) innovative ultrasound course, hosted at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).

The Austere and Prehospital Ultrasound (APUS) Course covered a wide range of applications for ultrasound as a point-of-care diagnostic aid.

While some techniques covered (such as optic ultrasound shown here) aren’t widely used in current UK practice, others such as ultrasound of the heart of internal organs are techniques used regularly by the PICT Team.

Shown on the left here is a “biplane mode” (unfortunately nothing to do with aeroplanes!).

It allows us to look as a blood vessel in two planes (or directions) and then cannulate this vessel with a needle under direct ultrasound guidance.

We are very grateful for CoROM and GCU for facilitating this course to be run in the UK! A first for Scotland and the UK, with the course usually being run at other locations across Europe.
